Arsenal Draw Atletico Madrid In Europa League Semis

Arsenal have a daunting task to reach the final of the Europa League after they were drawn against Atletico Madrid in the semifinals Friday.

In the other semifinal tie, French club Olympique Marseille will play FC Salzburg, who continue their improbable run in the competition.

After surviving a scare to overcome CSKA Moscow in the last round Thursday, Arsene Wenger’s men will play the first leg at the Emirates Stadium against Atletico, who are bookmakers favourites to lift the trophy for a third time.

Diego Simeone’s men lost 1-0 to Sporting in Lisbon on Thursday but advanced 2-1 on aggregate, while Danny Welbeck and Aaron Ramsey both scored in the last 15 minutes to secure Arsenal a 2-2 draw on the night and 6-3 aggregate win over Russians CSKA Moscow.

Marseille overcame a first-leg deficit to beat German side RB Leipzig 5-3 over two legs in their quarter-final, while Salzburg continued their giant-killing act by defeating Italian side Lazio 4-1 at home to win 6-5 on aggregate after losing the first leg 4-2.

Finalists in 1994, Salzburg have already beaten Marseille once in the competition this season, a 1-0 victory in Austria, while both sides drew 0-0 at the Velodrome.

The first legs will take place on April 26 with the second on May 3.
