Woman Trapped In Earthquake For 2 Days, Rescued After Neighbour Heard Cries

A young woman has been pulled alive from the rubble of a shop that collapsed when a 6.9-magnitude earthquake rocked Indonesian holiday islands.

Nadia Revanale spent two days trapped under debris after the powerful quake killed at least 98 people, flattened villages and left tens of thousands of people homeless.

Neighbours heard the 23-year-old’s cries for help from the mangled concrete and alerted rescuers, who used their hands to clear debris in a desperate bid to reach her.

It took four hours to free her from the rubble as the rescue on the island of Lombok provided a rare moment of joy for rescuers who are in a race against time after the second-deadliest quake of 2018.

Ms Revanale was shopping at the minimart in Pemenang when the earthquake hit on Sunday night and send terrified people running into the streets.

She was rescued on Tuesday after spending two days trapped in the remains of the destroyed shop.

After Ms Revanale was taken to hospital, Marcos Eric, a volunteer rescue worker from a mining company, told Reuters: “First we used our hands to clear the debris, then hammers, chisels and machines to slowly remove the pieces.

“It took many hours but we’re thankful it worked and this person was found alive.”

Rescuers have been checking collapsed buildings in Lombok for signs of survivors, and there are fears the death toll will rise as rubble is cleared.

Four people were trapped in the remains of a two-storey mosque in Pemenang, where rescuers were hopeful that at least one of them was still alive.
